人についての情報を付け加えるときは、2つの文を who でつなぎます。この who は he, she, they の代わりになります。
人についての2つの文をつなぐ who
The man is a doctor. He lives next door. → The man who lives next door is a doctor.
I have a friend. She speaks five languages. → I have a friend who speaks five languages.
Not "The man which lives next door is a doctor." — say "The man who lives next door is a doctor.". 人に対しては which ではなく who を使います。

ものや動物についての情報を付け加えるときは、which または that でつなぎます。どちらを使っても構いません。
This is the bus. It goes downtown. → This is the bus that goes downtown.
I like films. They have happy endings. → I like films which have happy endings.
Not "I like movies who have happy endings." — say "I like movies that have happy endings.". 映画はものなので、who ではなく that や which を使います。

who / which / that は省略できる
who, which, that が動作の受け手（他の誰かがそれに対して動作をする）のときは、省略することができます（"the film that I saw" = "the film I saw"）。それが動作を行う主語（動作主）のときは省略できません。
This is the film. I saw it last night. → This is the film (that) I saw last night.
Hiroshi is the friend. Mei met him. → Hiroshi is the friend (who) Mei met.
Here is the book. You lent it to me. → Here is the book (that) you lent me.
Not "This is the song I like it." — say "This is the song I like.". つなぐことばを省いたときは、it を戻してはいけません（"the song I like it" ではなく the song I like）。

場所についての2つの文をつなぐ where
場所についての情報を付け加えるときは、where でつなぎます。
That's the restaurant. We ate there. → That's the restaurant where we ate.
This is the place. We met here. → This is the place where we met.
Not "This is the place which we met." — say "This is the place where we met.". 何かが起きる場所に対しては、which ではなく where を使います。
