RELATIVE CLAUSES (A2 Grammar)

Relative clauses give extra information. WHO = people. WHICH/THAT = things. WHERE = places.

Quick tip: WHO = people. WHICH/THAT = things. WHERE = places. THAT can replace WHO or WHICH.

WHO for people

Use who to talk about people. Who replaces he/she/they.

• The man who lives next door is a doctor.
• I have a friend who speaks 5 languages.
• People who exercise are healthier.
• She's the teacher who helped me.

WHICH/THAT for things

Use which or that for things and animals. Both are correct.

• The book that/which I bought is great.
• I like movies that have happy endings.
• This is the car which I want.
• The phone that is broken is mine.

WHERE for places

Use where for places. Where = in which/at which.

• That's the restaurant where we ate.
• The city where I was born is beautiful.
• This is the place where we met.
• I know a cafe where the coffee is great.

Common mistakes

• Not "The man which lives here" — say "The man who lives here". People = WHO, not WHICH.
• Not "The restaurant which we ate" — say "The restaurant where we ate". Places = WHERE.
