O who entra no lugar de he, she ou they.
who junta duas frases sobre uma pessoa
The man is a doctor. He lives next door. → The man who lives next door is a doctor.
I have a friend. She speaks five languages. → I have a friend who speaks five languages.
Not "The man which lives next door is a doctor." — say "The man who lives next door is a doctor.". Para uma pessoa, use who, não which.
Experimente: I have a friend. She speaks five languages. Resposta: I have a friend who speaks five languages. I have a friend who speaks five languages. "Which" é para coisas, então deixe de fora.
which ou that junta duas frases sobre uma coisa
Para acrescentar informação sobre uma coisa ou um animal, junte com which ou that. Os dois funcionam.
This is the bus. It goes downtown. → This is the bus that goes downtown.
I like films. They have happy endings. → I like films which have happy endings.
Not "I like movies who have happy endings." — say "I like movies that have happy endings.". Movies são coisas, então use that ou which, não who.
Experimente: This is the bus. It goes downtown. Junte as duas frases em uma só. Resposta: This is the bus that goes downtown. — A bus é uma coisa, então junte com that (ou which): This is the bus that goes downtown. "Who" é só para pessoas, então deixe de fora.
Você pode deixar de fora who / which / that
Quando who, which ou that é quem recebe a ação (outra pessoa faz a ação sobre ele), você pode omitir: "the film that I saw" = "the film I saw". Mantenha quando for quem faz a ação.
This is the film. I saw it last night. → This is the film (that) I saw last night.
Hiroshi is the friend. Mei met him. → Hiroshi is the friend (who) Mei met.
Here is the book. You lent it to me. → Here is the book (that) you lent me.
Not "This is the song I like it." — say "This is the song I like.". Quando você tira a palavra de ligação, não volte a colocar it: the song I like, e não "the song I like it".
Experimente: This is the book. Amina recommended it. Resposta: This is the book Amina recommended. — Amina faz a ação, então o livro é quem recebe: dá para tirar a palavra de ligação: This is the book Amina recommended.
That's the restaurant. We ate there. → That's the restaurant where we ate.
This is the place. We met here. → This is the place where we met.
Not "This is the place which we met." — say "This is the place where we met.". Para um lugar onde algo acontece, use where, não which.
Experimente: This is the cafe. We first met here. Resposta: This is the cafe where we first met. — A cafe é um lugar onde você faz alguma coisa, então junte com where: This is the cafe where we first met. "Who" é para pessoas, então deixe de fora.
Experimente: Amina is the teacher. She helped me. Junte as duas frases. Escolha a palavra de ligação certa e deixe as outras de fora. Resposta: Amina is the teacher who helped me. — A teacher é uma pessoa, então a palavra de ligação é who: Amina is the teacher who helped me. "Which" é para coisas e "where" é para lugares, então deixe as duas de fora.
