1つずつ数えられるもの（one apple, two apples）もあれば、通常そのままでは数えないもの（water, rice, bread）もあります。簡単な見分け方として、one, two, three と数えて自然に聞こえるか考えてみましょう。
数えられますか？
one apple, two apples (you count them one by one)
water (we do not say "two waters" for the water itself)
one chair, two chairs (you count them one by one)

数えられない名詞：a はつかず、複数形にもならない
数えられない名詞には、a / an をつけず、-s もつけません。代わりに some を使うか、単語をそのまま使います。
I drink water every day.
Would you like some coffee?
She gave me some advice.
Not "I want a water." — say "I want some water.". 水は数えられないので、ここでは a をつけません。some water（または a glass of water）を使います。
やってみよう: There is ___ on the table. (some bread / a bread / two breads) 答え: some bread — パンは1つずつ数えられないので、"a bread" や "breads" とは言えません。some bread（または a piece of bread）を使います。
慣れておきたいよく使う単語
数えられそうに感じても、英語では数えない日常的なことばがいくつかあります。練習しながら慣れていきましょう：money, time, bread, rice, water, homework, advice。
I need some money. (not "a money")
She gave me good advice. (not "an advice")
I have homework tonight. (not "a homework")

容器を使って数える
では、水を数えたいときはどうするのでしょうか？a glass of, a cup of, a piece of のように、入れる容器や単位を数えます。数えることばは容器につくため、"two waters" ではなく two glasses of water と言います。
