لسؤال أحدهم عمّا يفعله، ابدأ بأداة السؤال، ثم do أو does، ثم الشخص، ثم الفعل المجرّد. استخدم does مع he و she و it؛ واستخدم do مع I و you و we و they. ويمكن أن تكون أداة السؤال where (مكان)، أو what (شيء)، أو when (وقت).

Amina lives in Haffenville. → Where does Amina live?
They work near the library. → Where do they work?
Mei likes apples. → What does Mei like?
Mei cooks in the evening. → When does Mei cook?
Not "Where does Amina lives? ("lives" after does)" — say "Where does Amina live? (with does, the action word is plain)". بعد does، استخدم الفعل المجرّد: live، لا "lives".
فعل be أم فعل حركي؟
انظر إلى الجملة أولًا. إذا كانت تحتوي أصلًا على is / are / am، انقل كلمة be هذه إلى البداية: She is happy. → Is she happy? أما إذا كان فيها فعل حركي مثل work, live, read، فاستخدم do أو does: She works. → Does she work?
She is happy. → Is she happy? (has is)
She works. → Does she work? (has an action word)
They are ready. → Are they ready? (has are)
They live here. → Do they live here? (has an action word)
Not "Is she work? (there is no be-word in "She works")" — say "Does she work? (an action word needs does)". لا توجد is / are / am في الجملة؟ إذن استخدم do أو does، لا كلمة be.
جرّب بنفسك: حوّل "Lars works." إلى سؤال. أيّها صحيح؟ (Does Lars work? / Is Lars work? / Do Lars work?) الإجابة: Does Lars work? — "Lars works" فيها كلمة فعل ولا توجد فيها is / are / am، لذا استخدم does: Does Lars work? أما "Is Lars work?" فتستدعي كلمة be غير موجودة في الجملة، و"Do Lars work?" تحتاج إلى does مع شخص واحد.
جرّب بنفسك: حوّل "Mei is happy." إلى سؤال. أيّها صحيح؟ (Is Mei happy? / Does Mei happy? / Does Mei be happy?) الإجابة: Is Mei happy? — "Mei is happy" تحتوي أصلًا على كلمة be وهي is، فانقلها إلى البداية: Is Mei happy? لا توجد كلمة فعل هنا، لذا لا مكان لـ does.
جرّب بنفسك: Amina works near the park. اسأل أين تعمل Amina. الإجابة: Where does Amina work? — ابدأ بـ Where، ثم does، ثم الفعل المجرّد work: Where does Amina work؟ مع does في البداية، يبقى الفعل مجرّدًا.
جرّب بنفسك: They live near the supermarket. اسأل أين يسكنون. الإجابة: Where do they live? — مع they، استخدم do (لا does): Where do they live؟ احتفظ بـ does لـ he و she و it. ويبقى الفعل مجرّدًا بعد كليهما.
جرّب بنفسك: Mei reads at eight o'clock. اسأل متى تقرأ Mei. الإجابة: When does Mei read? — ابدأ بـ When، ثم does، ثم الفعل المجرّد read: When does Mei read؟ مع does في البداية، يبقى الفعل مجرّدًا.
السؤال بـ how
لتسأل عن الطريقة التي يفعل بها أحدٌ شيئًا، ابدأ بـ How، ثم do أو does، ثم الشخص، ثم الفعل المجرّد.
You go to work by bus. → How do you go to work?
She travels to the office by train. → How does she travel to the office?

(How do / What time do / How often do) الإجابة: How do — يجيب Hiroshi بطريقة تنقّل، مشيًا (on foot)، لذلك كلمة السؤال هي How: How do you get to school? أما What time do فتسأل عن وقت على الساعة، و How often do تسأل عن عدد المرات. ولا واحدة منهما تناسب 'I walk.'
السؤال بـ which
Which تطلب من أحد أن يختار من مجموعة صغيرة معروفة. استخدمها عندما يكون أمامك اختيار حقيقي.
You work mornings or afternoons. → Which shift do you work?
The office uses English and Spanish. → Which language do you use at work?
جرّب بنفسك: Interviewer: We have a morning van and an afternoon van. ___ (Which van do you want? / Where do you park the van? / What time do you drive the van?) الإجابة: Which van do you want? — هناك شاحنتان محدّدتان معروضتان، واحدة صباحية وأخرى مسائية، و Which van do you want? تطلب من المتقدّم أن يختار إحداهما. أما Where do you park the van? فتسأل عن مكان، و What time do you drive the van? تسأل عن وقت على الساعة. ولا واحدة منهما تناسب الاختيار بين شاحنتين محدّدتين.
السؤال عن الوقت
لتسأل عن وقت على الساعة، استخدم What time.
You start work at nine. → What time do you start work?
The shop opens at ten. → What time does the shop open?

(What time / How often / Which) الإجابة: What time — الإجابة وقت على الساعة، eight o'clock، لذلك السؤال هو What time: What time do you finish work? أما How often فتسأل عن عدد المرات لا عن وقت على الساعة، و Which تأتي قبل اسم، مثل Which shift، وتحتاج إلى مجموعة تختار منها — وهنا لا يوجد هذا ولا ذاك.
