누군가 무엇을 하는지 물으려면 의문사로 시작하고 do 또는 does와 사람을 쓴 다음, 동작을 나타내는 말을 원형으로 써요. he, she, it에는 does를 쓰고, I, you, we, they에는 do를 써요. 의문사로는 where(장소), what(사물), when(시간) 등을 쓸 수 있어요.
Amina lives in Haffenville. → Where does Amina live?
They work near the library. → Where do they work?
Mei likes apples. → What does Mei like?
Mei cooks in the evening. → When does Mei cook?
Not "Where does Amina lives? ("lives" after does)" — say "Where does Amina live? (with does, the action word is plain)". does 뒤에는 "lives"가 아니라 기본 형태인 live를 써요.
문장에 이미 is / are / am이 있다면 그 be동사를 맨 앞으로 보내요: She is happy. → Is she happy? work, live, read 같은 동작을 나타내는 말이 있다면 do 또는 does를 써요: She works. → Does she work?
She is happy. → Is she happy? (has is)
She works. → Does she work? (has an action word)
They are ready. → Are they ready? (has are)
They live here. → Do they live here? (has an action word)
Not "Is she work? (there is no be-word in "She works")" — say "Does she work? (an action word needs does)". 문장에 is / are / am이 없나요? 그렇다면 be동사가 아니라 do 또는 does를 쓰세요.
(Does Lars work? / Is Lars work? / Do Lars work?) Does Lars work? — "Lars works"에는 동작을 나타내는 말이 있고 is / are / am이 없으므로 does를 써서 Does Lars work? "Is Lars work?"는 문장에 없는 be동사를 억지로 쓴 것이고, "Do Lars work?"
해 보세요: "Mei is happy." (Is Mei happy? / Does Mei happy? / Does Mei be happy?) Is Mei happy? — "Mei is happy"에는 이미 be동사인 is가 있으므로 맨 앞으로 보내서 Is Mei happy?
해 보세요: Amina works near the park. Where does Amina work? — Where로 시작하고 does를 쓴 다음 동작을 나타내는 말의 원형인 work를 써서 Where does Amina work?
They live near the supermarket. Where do they live? — they에는 does가 아니라 do를 써서 Where do they live?라고 해요. does는 he, she, it에만 써요.
해 보세요: Mei reads at eight o'clock. When does Mei read? — When으로 시작하고 does를 쓴 다음 동작을 나타내는 말의 원형인 read를 써서 When does Mei read?
How로 묻기
You go to work by bus. → How do you go to work?
She travels to the office by train. → How does she travel to the office?
Farid: Hiroshi, ___ you get to school every day? Hiroshi: I walk. (How do / What time do / How often do) 정답: How do — Hiroshi는 걸어서 간다는 이동 방법으로 대답하니까 의문사는 How예요. How do you get to school? What time do는 시각을, How often do는 횟수를 묻는 말이라서 둘 다 'I walk.'
Which로 묻기
You work mornings or afternoons. → Which shift do you work?
The office uses English and Spanish. → Which language do you use at work?
Interviewer: We have a morning van and an afternoon van. ___ (Which van do you want? / Where do you park the van? / What time do you drive the van?) Which van do you want? Which van do you want? Where do you park the van? What time do you drive the van?
What time으로 묻기
You start work at nine. → What time do you start work?
The shop opens at ten. → What time does the shop open?
Interviewer: ___ do you finish work? Lars: At eight o'clock. (What time / How often / Which) 정답: What time — 대답이 eight o'clock이라는 시각이니까 질문은 What time이에요: What time do you finish work? How often은 시각이 아니라 횟수를 묻고, Which는 Which shift처럼 명사 앞에 오며 고를 대상이 있어야 해요.
