Dieselbe Art kurzer Wörter wie beim Vergleichen (eine Silbe, wie tall, fast, old, cheap) bildet die Spitzenform mit the davor und -est am Ende.
Kurze Wörter: the ...-est
Lars is the tallest in the class.
This is the cheapest café in Haffenville.
Magaff Library is the oldest building here.
Always keep the: not "tallest in the class", but the tallest.
Probier es: Lars is ___ in the class. (the tallest / tallest / the most tall) Antwort: the tallest — Tall ist ein kurzes Wort, also hängst du -est an: tallest.
Wörter auf -e hängen nur -st an: large → the largest · nice → the nicest.
Senfarren Tower is the biggest building in Haffenville.
July is the hottest month of the year.
This is the largest room in the house.
That was the nicest meal all week.
So it is biggest (not "bigest") and largest (not "largeest").
Probier es: July is ___ month of the year. (the hottest / the hotest / the most hot) Antwort: the hottest — Bei hot verdoppelt sich der letzte Buchstabe vor -est: the hottest (nicht "the hotest"), genau wie bei big → the biggest. Hot ist kurz, also nimmt es die Endung, nicht "the most hot".
Probier es: This is ___ room in the house. (the largest / the largeest / the most large) Antwort: the largest — Large endet bereits auf ein stummes -e, also fällt das e vor -est weg: the largest (nicht "the largeest"). Large ist kurz, also nimmt es die Endung und kein "the most large".
Lange Wörter: the most ...
Und die längeren Wörter (zwei oder mehr Silben), die beim Vergleichen more hatten, bekommen hier the most. Hänge kein -est an.
Senfarren View Hotel is the most expensive in town.
That was the most interesting film this year.
This is the most difficult part.
Watch out: most two-beat words use the most too: the most famous, the most modern (not "the famousest"). Words ending in -y take the ending instead: the busiest, the happiest.
Probier es: That was ___ film this year. (the most interesting / the interestingest / most interesting) Antwort: the most interesting — Interesting ist ein langes Wort, also setzt du the most davor, statt -est anzuhängen (nicht "interestingest"). Und vergiss the nicht: the most interesting (nicht nur "most interesting").
Wörter, die auf -y enden
Wörter auf -y, die beim Vergleichen -ier bekamen, enden hier auf -iest mit the davor: happy → the happiest · easy → the easiest · busy → the busiest.
Today is the busiest day of the week.
That is the easiest question on the test.
She looks the happiest in this photo.
Probier es: Today is ___ day of the week. (the busiest / the most busy / the busyest) Antwort: the busiest — Busy endet auf -y, also verwandelt sich das y in iest: the busiest (nicht "the busyest" und nicht "the most busy", weil dieses kurze -y-Wort die Endung bekommt).
good, bad, far
Die drei Ausnahmen von vorhin haben auch bei der Spitzenform eigene Formen: good → the best, bad → the worst, far → the farthest (oder the furthest).
Ghafridge Cafe makes the best coffee in town.
That was the worst traffic all week.
The station is the farthest (or the furthest) stop on this line.
Probier es: Ghafridge Cafe makes ___ coffee in town. (the best / the goodest / the most good) Antwort: the best — Good bekommt kein -est und kein most. Seine Spitzenform heißt the best. ("The goodest" und "the most good" wären regelmäßig, aber good musst du auswendig wissen).
Immer mit the
Vor der Spitzenform steht immer the, weil es um die eine Nummer 1 in der Gruppe geht: the tallest, the most expensive, the best. Lass the nie weg.
She is the tallest in the class.
Senfarren View Hotel is the most expensive in town.
Ghafridge Cafe makes the best coffee here.
Not "She is tallest in the class." — say "She is the tallest in the class.". Vor der Spitzenform steht immer the.
Probier es: She is ___ in the class. (the tallest / tallest) Antwort: the tallest — Die Spitzenform braucht immer the davor: the tallest (nicht bloß "tallest"). Das the zeigt auf die eine Person ganz oben in der Gruppe.
Probier es: Of all the cafés, this one is ___ and it has ___ cakes. (the cheapest … the most delicious / the most cheap … the deliciousest / cheapest … most delicious) Antwort: the cheapest … the most delicious — Cheap ist kurz → the cheapest. Delicious ist lang → the most delicious. Beide brauchen the davor. Die Wortlänge entscheidet über -est oder most, the steht immer da.
