SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES (A2 Grammar)

Use superlatives to say something is THE MOST in a group. Always use THE!

Quick tip: Always use THE! 1 syllable = THE -EST. 3+ syllables = THE MOST. Don't forget THE!

Short adjectives: THE + -EST

One-syllable adjectives: use the + adjective + -est.

• tall - the tallest (She is the tallest.)
• fast - the fastest (Cheetahs are the fastest.)
• old - the oldest (He's the oldest here.)
• cheap - the cheapest (This is the cheapest.)

Long adjectives: THE MOST + adjective

Three or more syllables: use the most before adjective.

• expensive - the most expensive
• interesting - the most interesting
• difficult - the most difficult
• beautiful - the most beautiful

Irregular superlatives (memorize!)

Same irregular adjectives as comparatives.

• good - the best
• bad - the worst
• far - the farthest/furthest
• much/many - the most

Common mistakes

• Not "biggest house" — say "the biggest house". Superlatives need THE.
• Not "the goodest" — say "the best". Good is irregular.
