数えられないもの（time, money, water）には much を使います。疑問文や否定文によく合います（How much …?, not much …, too much …）。肯定文でたくさんの量を表すときは、英語では a lot of を好んで使います（あとのカードで学習します）。
数えられない名詞に使う much
How much time do you have? (you cannot count time)
I do not have much money this week. (negative)
She does not eat much meat, and that is too much sugar for one cup.
Not "How many water do you drink?" — say "How much water do you drink?". 水は数えられないので、many ではなく much を使います。
やってみよう: We do not have ___ time before the meeting starts. (much / many / a lot) 答え: much — 時間は数えられず、これは否定文なので much を使います。"Many" は数えられる名詞に使い、"a lot" は名詞の前では of が必要です（a lot of time）。
数えられる名詞に使う many
数えられるもの（複数形の名詞: hours, people, restaurants）には many を使います。much と同様に、疑問文や否定文によく合います（How many …?, not many …）。
How many hours do you work every day? (you can count hours)
There are not many people at the party yet. (negative)
How many languages do you speak?
Not "How much hours do you work?" — say "How many hours do you work?". 時間（hours）は数えられるので、much ではなく many を使います。
やってみよう: How ___ restaurants are there in Downtown Haffenville? (many / much / a lot of) 答え: many — レストランは数えられ、これは疑問文なので many を使います。"Much" は数えられない名詞に使い、"How a lot of restaurants" は正しい英語ではありません。
両方に使える a lot of
肯定文でたくさんの量を表すときは、a lot of を使います。数えられる名詞と数えられない名詞の両方に使えます（a lot of friends, a lot of time）。うしろに名詞が続かないときは of を取ります（Yes, a lot）。
There are a lot of restaurants in this area. (you count restaurants)
We have a lot of homework to do tonight. (you cannot count homework)
Do you drink a lot of coffee? Yes, a lot.
Not "I have a lot friends." — say "I have a lot of friends.". 名詞の前では of を残します（a lot of friends）。of を落とすのは、うしろに名詞が続かないときだけです。
やってみよう: We have ___ homework to do this weekend. (a lot of / much / many) 答え: a lot of — 肯定文でたくさんの量を表すには a lot of を使います（a lot of homework）。肯定文での "much homework" は不自然に聞こえ、homework は数えられないので "many" も当てはまりません。
やってみよう: Amina asks: "How ___ sugar and how ___ eggs do we need for the cake?" (much … many / many … much / much … much) 答え: much … many — 砂糖は数えられないので much を使います。卵は数えられるので many を使います。数えられないなら much、数えられるなら many です。
