THIRD CONDITIONAL - PAST UNREAL SITUATIONS (B1 Grammar)

Use Third Conditional to talk about UNREAL situations in the PAST - things that DIDN'T happen. You're imagining how the past could have been different. Structure: IF + PAST PERFECT, WOULD HAVE + past participle. Use for regrets, criticism, and imagining different past outcomes.

Quick tip: IF + had + past participle, WOULD HAVE + past participle. Use for PAST situations that DIDN'T happen. You can't change the past - you're just imagining!

Form: IF + past perfect, WOULD HAVE + past participle

IF clause = HAD + past participle (past perfect). Result = WOULD HAVE + past participle. Both parts talk about the PAST that didn't happen.

• If I had studied, I would have passed the exam. (but I didn't study, so I failed)
• If she had known, she would have come. (but she didn't know, so she didn't come)
• We would have arrived on time if we had left earlier. (but we left late)
• If they had invited me, I would have gone. (but they didn't invite me)

Use: PAST situations that DIDN'T happen

Use to imagine how the past could have been DIFFERENT. The situation is UNREAL - it didn't happen, and you can't change it now.

• If I had woken up earlier, I wouldn't have missed the train. (reality: I woke up late and missed it)
• If he had been more careful, he wouldn't have had an accident. (reality: he wasn't careful and had accident)
• She would have got the job if she had done better in the interview. (reality: interview was bad, didn't get job)
• If we had known about the party, we would have attended. (reality: we didn't know, so we didn't go)

Use for: REGRETS and CRITICISM

Third Conditional often expresses REGRET (wishing the past was different) or CRITICISM (blaming past actions).

• If I had saved more money, I could have bought a house. (regret - I didn't save)
• If you had listened to me, this wouldn't have happened! (criticism - you didn't listen)
• I wouldn't have been late if you had told me earlier. (mild blame)
• If I had known it was your birthday, I would have bought a present. (regret)

Common mistakes

• Not "If I would have known, I would have come." — say "If I had known, I would have come.". NEVER use 'would have' in the IF clause! Use past perfect (had + past participle) after IF..
• Not "If I had studied, I would pass." — say "If I had studied, I would have passed.". Both clauses must be about the PAST. Use 'would HAVE + past participle' in the result (not just 'would')..
• Not "If I knew, I would have told you." — say "If I had known, I would have told you.". Use past perfect (had known) in IF clause for Third Conditional, not simple past (knew)..
