SECOND CONDITIONAL - UNREAL/IMAGINARY SITUATIONS (B1 Grammar)

Use Second Conditional for UNREAL, IMAGINARY, or HYPOTHETICAL situations in the present or future. The situation is NOT real or is UNLIKELY to happen. Structure: IF + PAST SIMPLE, WOULD + verb.

Quick tip: IF + past simple, WOULD + verb. Use for UNREAL/IMAGINARY situations now or UNLIKELY future situations. Past tense = imaginary!

Form: IF + past simple, WOULD + verb

IF clause = past simple (but meaning is present/future, NOT past!). Result clause = WOULD + base verb. Use past tense to show the situation is UNREAL.

• If I had a million dollars, I would travel the world. (I don't have it - imaginary)
• If I were you, I would apologize. (I'm not you - impossible)
• She would be happier if she had more friends. (she doesn't have them)
• If we lived in Paris, we would visit museums every day. (we don't live there)

Use 1: IMAGINARY situations (not real now)

Use for situations that are NOT TRUE now or are OPPOSITE to reality. You're imagining 'what if...?'

• If I played guitar, I would join the band. (but I don't play guitar)
• If he were taller, he would play basketball. (but he's not tall)
• We would buy a house if we had more money. (but we don't have enough)
• If I didn't have to work, I would sleep all day. (but I do have to work)

Use 2: UNLIKELY future situations

Use for future situations that are POSSIBLE but very UNLIKELY to happen. You think it probably won't happen.

• If I won the lottery, I would quit my job. (very unlikely to win)
• If aliens landed on Earth, what would you do? (probably won't happen)
• She would help if you asked her. (but you probably won't ask)
• If he called me, I would be shocked. (I don't think he'll call)

Common mistakes

• Not "If I would have money, I would buy a car." — say "If I had money, I would buy a car.". NEVER use WOULD in the IF clause! Use past simple (had, were, knew) after IF..
• Not "If I was you, I would leave." — say "If I were you, I would leave.". Use WERE (not was) for I/he/she/it in Second Conditional, especially in 'If I were you' advice..
• Not "If I have time tomorrow, I would help." — say "If I had time tomorrow, I would help. OR If I have time tomorrow, I will help.". Match the conditional! IF + past → WOULD (Second). IF + present → WILL (First). Don't mix them!.
