PAST PERFECT TENSE (B1 Grammar)

Past Perfect shows something happened BEFORE another past action. It's the past of the past. Use it to sequence events clearly in narratives.

Quick tip: Two past actions: which happened FIRST? First = HAD + past participle. Second = Past Simple.

Form: HAD + Past Participle

Use had (same for all subjects) + past participle (3rd form).

• I had finished before he arrived.
• She had already left when I called.
• They had never seen snow before.
• We had eaten dinner already.

Use: Action before another past action

First action = Past Perfect. Second action = Past Simple.

• When I arrived, the movie had started.
• She had finished before she left.
• They had already eaten when I got there.
• He realized he had made a mistake.

Use with because (explaining past)

Explain WHY something happened in the past.

• I wasn't hungry because I had eaten.
• She was tired because she had worked all day.
• They were happy because they had passed.
• We couldn't enter because we had lost the key.

Common mistakes

• Not "When I arrived, the movie started already" — say "When I arrived, the movie had started". Earlier action needs Past Perfect.
• Not "I had seen him yesterday" — say "I saw him yesterday". Single past action = Past Simple.

Practise it

Look for TWO past actions. First one = Past Perfect (had done). Second one = Past Simple (did).
