Not all reported speech uses 'said' or 'told'. Verbs like advise, offer, promise, and suggest report HOW someone spoke — but each one needs a different pattern.
Quick tip: advise/tell/ask + sb + to. offer/promise/agree + to. suggest/recommend + that... or -ing (never 'to').
advise / tell / ask + someone + to
These verbs name a person, then use to + base verb.
She advised me to rest.
He told us to wait.
The doctor asked her to come back.
They reminded him to call.
offer / promise / agree / refuse + to
These verbs use to + base verb, with no person in between.
Farid offered to pay.
Lani promised to help.
He agreed to come.
She refused to answer.
suggest / recommend + that... or -ing
These verbs do NOT use 'to'. Use that + clause, or the -ing form. Never 'suggest someone to'.
She suggested that we leave early.
She suggested leaving early.
He recommended trying the soup.
He recommended that I try the soup.
Common mistakes
Not "She suggested me to leave." — say "She suggested that I leave / She suggested leaving.". 'suggest' never takes 'someone to' — use that-clause or -ing.
Not "He offered helping me." — say "He offered to help me.". 'offer' takes 'to' + base verb, not -ing.
Not "The doctor advised to rest." — say "The doctor advised me to rest.". 'advise' needs a person before 'to'.

Ask which verb it is: advise/tell/ask need a person + to; offer/promise just take to; suggest/recommend take that... or -ing.
