Some vs Any (A1 Grammar)

Use some in positive sentences, any in negatives and questions.

Quick tip: Positive→some, Negative→any, Questions→any

SOME = positive

Use some in positive sentences.

• I have some books.
• There is some water.
• She bought some apples.

ANY = negative

Use any in negative sentences.

• I don't have any money.
• There isn't any milk.
• She doesn't have any sisters.

ANY = questions

Use any in questions (except offers/requests).

• Do you have any questions?
• Is there any coffee?
• Would you like some tea? (offer)

Common mistakes

• Not "I have any books." — say "I have some books.". Use some in positive.
• Not "I don't have some money." — say "I don't have any money.". Use any in negative.
• Not "Do you have some questions?" — say "Do you have any questions?". Use any in questions.
