Adjective Order (A1 Grammar)

When using two adjectives: SIZE + COLOR + noun.

Quick tip: SIZE + COLOR + noun. A big red car, NOT a red big car.

Size + Color + Noun

Size always comes before color.

• a big red car ✓
• a small blue bag ✓
• a large green apple ✓

Size Adjectives

Words for how big or small something is.

• big, large, huge (large)
• small, little, tiny (small)
• long, short, tall (length/height)

Color Adjectives

Words for what color something is. Always after size.

• red, blue, green, yellow
• black, white, brown, pink
• a big blue ball

Common mistakes

• Not "a red big car" — say "a big red car". Size before color.
• Not "a blue small ball" — say "a small blue ball". Size before color.
• Not "a green large apple" — say "a large green apple". Size before color.

Practise it
