Short Answers (A1 Grammar)

Don't just say Yes/No. Add the auxiliary verb.

Quick tip: Match the auxiliary! Do→do, Is→is, Can→can

Do/Does → do/does

Answer with do/does or don't/doesn't.

• Do you like it? → Yes, I do.
• Does she work? → Yes, she does.
• Do they play? → No, they don't.

Am/Is/Are → am/is/are

Answer with am/is/are or 'm not/isn't/aren't.

• Are you happy? → Yes, I am.
• Is she ready? → No, she isn't.
• Are they here? → Yes, they are.

Can → can/can't

Answer with can or can't.

• Can you swim? → Yes, I can.
• Can she drive? → No, she can't.
• Can they help? → Yes, they can.

Common mistakes

• Not "Do you like it? - Yes, I like." — say "Yes, I do.". Use auxiliary, not main verb.
• Not "Is she happy? - Yes, she happy." — say "Yes, she is.". Include 'is'.
• Not "Can you swim? - Yes, I swim." — say "Yes, I can.". Use 'can', not main verb.
