Possessive Adjectives (A1 Grammar)

Show who owns something. Always put before a noun.

Match to the Owner

Each person has a possessive word.

• I have a book. → This is my book.
• You have a bag. → This is your bag.
• He has a car. → This is his car.
• She has a phone. → This is her phone.

For Groups and Things

We, they, and it also have possessive forms.

• We have a house. → This is our house.
• They have a dog. → This is their dog.
• The cat has a toy. → This is its toy.

Always Before the Noun

The possessive word comes first, then the thing.

• my book ✓
• book my ✗
• her phone ✓
• phone her ✗

Common mistakes

• Not "This is she bag." — say "This is her bag.". Use her, not she, before nouns.
• Not "The dog wagged it's tail." — say "The dog wagged its tail.". its = owns, it's = it is.
• Not "This is you're book." — say "This is your book.". your = owns, you're = you are.
