Basic Adjectives (A1 Grammar)

Adjectives describe nouns. They tell us what something is like.

Quick tip: Adjective + Noun OR be + Adjective. Never add -s!

BEFORE the Noun

Adjectives usually come before the noun.

• a big house
• a beautiful flower
• an old car

AFTER 'be' Verbs

Adjectives can come after am/is/are/was/were.

• The house is big.
• She is funny.
• The car was old.

Adjectives DON'T Change

Same form for singular/plural. No -s!

• a big dog / two big dogs
• a happy boy / happy children
• NOT: bigs dogs ✗

Common mistakes

• Not "a house big" — say "a big house". Adjective BEFORE noun.
• Not "two bigs dogs" — say "two big dogs". No -s on adjectives.
• Not "They are happies." — say "They are happy.". Adjectives don't change.
