Wenn du zwei Dinge mit einem kurzen Wort (eine Silbe, wie tall, fast, old, cheap) vergleichst, hängst du -er an und nimmst than dazu.
Kurze Wörter: -er than anhängen
Amina is taller than Lars.
The metro is faster than the bus.
This jacket is cheaper than that one.
Two spelling changes to watch: words like big and hot double the last letter (big → bigger, hot → hotter), and words already ending in -e just add -r (large → larger, nice → nicer).
So it is bigger (not "biger") and larger (not "largeer").
Probier es: The metro is ___ the bus. (faster than / more fast than / faster that) Antwort: faster than — Fast ist ein kurzes Wort, also hängst du -er an: faster. Kurze Wörter brauchen kein "more" (nicht "more fast"). Und das Vergleichswort heißt than, nicht "that": faster than the bus.
Probier es: July is ___ June this year. (hotter than / hoter than / more hot than) Antwort: hotter than — Bei hot verdoppelt sich der letzte Buchstabe vor -er: hotter (nicht "hoter").
Probier es: This room is ___ the kitchen. (larger than / largeer than / more large than) Antwort: larger than — Large endet bereits auf ein stummes -e, also hängst du nur -r an: larger (nicht "largeer").
Lange Wörter: more ... than
Setze stattdessen more davor und behalte than bei.
Senfarren View Hotel is more expensive than the hostel.
This book is more interesting than the film.
Physics is more difficult than math for me.
Watch out: most two-beat words use more too: more famous, more modern, more careful (not "famouser"). Words ending in -y take the ending instead: busier, happier.
Probier es: This book is ___ the film. (more interesting than / interestinger than / more interesting that) Antwort: more interesting than — Interesting ist ein langes Wort, deshalb setzt du more davor statt eine -er-Endung anzuhängen (nicht "interestinger"). Für den Vergleich bleibt than: more interesting than the film.
This box is heavier than that one.
Mondays are busier than Fridays.
She is happier than before.
Probier es: This box is ___ that one. (heavier than / more heavy than / heavyer than) Antwort: heavier than — Heavy endet auf -y, also wird das y zu ier: heavier (nicht "heavyer" und nicht "more heavy", weil dieses kurze -y-Wort trotzdem die Endung bekommt).
good, bad, far
This café is better than the old one.
The traffic today is worse than yesterday.
The station is farther than (or further than) the park.
Probier es: This café is ___ the old one. (better than / gooder than / more good than) Antwort: better than — Good bekommt kein -er und kein more.
Probier es: Senfarren View Hotel is ___ the hostel, and the walk there is ___ I thought. (more expensive than … longer than / expensiver than … more long than / more expensive than … more long than) Antwort: more expensive than … longer than — Expensive ist lang → more expensive.
