myself, yourself, themselves (A2)

こちらが全体の一覧です。I → myself、you（1人）→ yourself、he → himself、she → herself、it → itself、we → ourselves、you（2人以上）→ yourselves、they → themselves。1人（1つ）のときは -self で終わり、2人（2つ）以上のときは -selves で終わります。

-self で終わることば

• The cat washed itself after eating.
• Come in, everyone — help yourselves to some tea!
• Watch the forms: himself (never "hisself") and themselves (never "theirselves").
• やってみよう: They enjoyed ___ at the party. (themselves / theirselves / themself) 答え: themselves — 複数の人に対しては themselves を使います。"Theirselves" はよくある間違いですが正しい単語ではありません。また "themself" は複数形の -selves になっていません。they → themselves です。
• やってみよう: The dog is clean now. It washed ___. (itself / himself / it) 答え: itself — その犬は1匹の動物で、その動物自身に対して動作をしているので、"it" に対する -self のことばである itself を使います。"Himself" は人間の男性に使われ、"it" では動作が本人に戻ることが表せません。the dog washed itself になります。
• やってみよう: Welcome, everyone! Please help ___ to some food. (yourselves / yourself / yourselfs) 答え: yourselves — 複数の人（みんな）に向かって話しかけているので、複数形の -selves を使って yourselves にします。"Yourself" は1人だけを指し、"yourselfs" は存在しない単語です。yourselves が正解です。

動作が自分自身に戻る時

その人が自分自身に対してその動作をする場合は、me / her / them ではなく -self のことばを使います。この -self のことばは動作の受け手となり、動作をした本人と同じ人がその動作を受けます。

• I cut myself while cooking.
• She taught herself to paint.
• Be careful, don't hurt yourself.
• Not "I hurt me." — say "I hurt myself.". 動作をする人とケガをした人が同じなので、me ではなく myself を使います。
• やってみよう: Be careful with the knife. Don't cut ___. (yourself / you / youself) 答え: yourself — 相手自身が指を切らないように注意しているので、動作が本人に戻ります。そのため yourself を使います。"You" だと別の人を指すことになり、"youself" は -r が抜けています。yourself が正解です。

同じ人？ それとも別の人？

同じ人なら -self のことばを使います。別の人なら me, her, them を使います。使うことばによって誰なのかが分かります。

• She saw herself in the mirror. (the same person)
• She saw her across the room. (a different person)
• We helped ourselves to cake. (us, the same people)
• Not "She saw her in the mirror." — say "She saw herself in the mirror.". 鏡に映っているのは同じ人なので herself です。Her だと別の人になってしまいます。
• やってみよう: Hiroshi looked at ___ in the mirror. (himself / him / his) 答え: himself — 鏡に映っているのは自分自身なので himself を使います。"Him" だと別の男性を指すことになり、"his" は人を表すのではなく持ち主を表すことばです。Hiroshi looked at himself になります。

強調のための myself

-self のことばは、「他の誰でもなくその人自身」という強調を加えることもでき、多くの場合「誰の手も借りずに（自分で）」という意味になります。この場合、受け手ではないので文から取り除いても文が成り立ちます。I made this cake myself → I made this cake。

• I made this cake myself. (I did it, no one helped)
• The manager herself phoned to say sorry. (the manager, not an assistant)
• You can move it to the end: I fixed the bike myself = I myself fixed the bike.
• やってみよう: Nobody helped Sara. She painted the whole room ___. (herself / her / she) 答え: herself — ここでは herself が強調を表しています。Sara は誰の手も借りずに自分だけでそれを行いました。彼女が塗ったのは自分自身ではなく "the whole room"（部屋全体）です。この単語を取り除いても文は成り立ちます（She painted the whole room）。したがって強調のことばは herself です。
• やってみよう: Kenji はキッチンの棚を作りました。だれにも手伝ってもらわず、ひとりで全部作業をしました。 「誰の手も借りずに、彼自身がやった」という強調を表している文はどちらですか？ (Kenji built the shelf himself. / Kenji hurt himself with the hammer.) 答え: Kenji built the shelf himself. — "Kenji built the shelf himself" では、himself が強調として使われています。彼は自分1人で作業をし、作ったものは "the shelf"（棚）です。"Kenji hurt himself" はもう1つの使い方で、動作が本人に戻り、himself がケガをした人を表します。この状況は1人で作業をしたことについてなので、built the shelf himself が正解です。

どれが入る？

選ぶ前に、動作を受けるのは誰か（本人と同じ人か、別の人か）を考えましょう。同じ人なら -self のことば（myself, yourself, herself…）を使います。別の人なら me, you, her, him, them を使います。1つの文で両方必要になることもあります。

• Mei made the dress herself, then gave it to her sister. (same person, then another)
• I told myself to stay calm, then I told them the news. (myself = me; them = other people)
• Ask same person? → yes: a -self word. → no: me / her / them.
• やってみよう: Mei made the dress ___, then she showed it to ___. (herself … her / her … herself / her … her) 答え: herself … her — 同じ人なら herself、別の人なら her を使います。
