物の前に何も置かないこともあります。a ＝ たくさんある中の1つ、新しい話題 · the ＝ お互いにどれかわかっているもの · 何もつけない ＝ 一般的なこと全体。

a、the、何もつけない

• Ira wants a sandwich. The sandwich is big.
• Liam likes coffee.
• Sandwiches are cheap here.
• Not "I like the coffee. (which coffee? the one we both know)" — say "I like coffee. (all coffee, in general)". a ＝ たくさんある中の1つ · the ＝ お互いにどれかわかっているもの · 何もつけない ＝ 一般的なこと全体。

一般的なこと全体について話すとき

あるもの全体（どこにあるものもすべて）について一般的に話すときは、前に何もつけずに複数形の名詞を使います。

• Sandwiches are cheap here.
• Liam loves cookies.
• Apples are good for you.
• Not "I like the apples. (which apples? the ones we both know)" — say "I like apples. (all apples, in general)". 全体についての一般的な話 → 前には何もつけないことが多いです。
• やってみよう: Iraは子どもと食べ物について話しています。彼女はこう言います："Eat fruit! ___ apples and bananas are good for you." どの形が入りますか？ (nothing / the) 答え: nothing — 世の中のリンゴやバナナ全般について言うときは、前に何もつけません：Apples and bananas are good for you。The apples and bananas だとお互いに知っている特定のリンゴやバナナを指すことになります。

特定のものを指すとき

一般的なことには何もつけません。でも目の前にあるこれを指すときは、the をつけます。

• Liam likes coffee. → all coffee, in general
• The coffee here is very good. → this cafe's coffee
• Ira loves apples. → The apples on this table are sweet.
• Not "Ira has a cup of coffee. "Coffee in my cup is cold."" — say "Ira has a cup of coffee. "The coffee in my cup is cold."". 一般的なこと → 何もつけない。特定のもの → the。
• やってみよう: Iraは Ghafridge Cafe でお茶を飲んでいます。店員にこう言います："___ tea in my cup is cold." どの形が入りますか？ (The / nothing) 答え: The — 世界中のすべてのお茶ではなく、自分のカップのお茶を指しているので、the がつきます：The tea in my cup is cold。

数えられないことば

water、coffee、rice のように、数えられないことばもあります。一般的な話をするときは、前に何もつけずに単語だけで使います：単に coffee とします。ただしカフェでは、a coffee は「コーヒー1杯」という意味になります。

• Liam drinks water.
• Ira loves coffee.
• There is rice on the menu.
• Not "I like a coffee. (coffee in general, so no a)" — say "I like coffee. (all coffee, in general)". 一般的な話では、water、coffee、rice のような数えられないことば → a はつけず、単語だけにします。
• やってみよう: Liamは毎日飲んでいる水について話しています。彼はこう言います："I drink ___." どれが入りますか？ (a water / water) 答え: water — "a water" を選んだなら、もう一度見てみましょう。Liam が話しているのは毎日飲む水のことで、一般的な話です。一般的な話では、数えられないことばの前には何もつけません：単に water とします。
