Do you know where it is? (polite questions) (B1 Grammar)

Use Do you know or Could you tell me + normal order (subject + verb) to ask a stranger or staff politely.

A gentler way to ask

Lars: Excuse me, do you know where the Senfarren Gazette office is?
Yasmin: Yes. It's in Senfarren, about ten minutes by bus.
Not "Do you know where is the shop?" — say "Do you know where the shop is?". Inside, go back to normal order: the shop is, not "is the shop".
Try it: Where is the station? Ask a stranger politely. Use normal order inside. Answer: Do you know where the station is? — Inside the polite question, use normal order: the station is.

Inside a polite question, drop do / does / did; the main verb takes the -s or the past form instead.

Lars: Could you tell me where the pottery class meets?
Ethan: Room four. It's already begun, though.
Lars: Oh no. Do you know when it started?
Try it: When does the museum close? Ask politely. Leave out the word you do not need. Answer: Could you tell me when the museum closes? — Drop does and put the -s on the verb: the museum closes.

For a yes/no question, join with if (or whether), then use normal order and drop do / does / did.

Diego: Excuse me, do you know if this bus stops at Senville Park?
Hiroshi: Yes, it does. It's the third stop.
Not "Do you know is it open?" — say "Do you know if it is open?". No where/who means it's a yes/no question, so add if and go back to normal order: if it is open.
Try it: Lars: Is the post office still open? Ask politely with if. Leave out the word you do not need. Answer: Do you know if the post office is still open? — No question word, so join with if and use normal order: if the post office is.
