Para comparar duas coisas com uma palavra curta (de uma sílaba só, como tall, fast, old, cheap), adicione -er e use than.
Palavras curtas: adicione -er than
Amina is taller than Lars.
The metro is faster than the bus.
This jacket is cheaper than that one.
Two spelling changes to watch: words like big and hot double the last letter (big → bigger, hot → hotter), and words already ending in -e just add -r (large → larger, nice → nicer).
So it is bigger (not "biger") and larger (not "largeer").
Experimente: The metro is ___ the bus. (faster than / more fast than / faster that) Resposta: faster than — Fast é uma palavra curta, então adicione -er: faster. Palavras curtas não usam "more" (não "more fast"). E a palavra de comparação é than, não "that": faster than the bus.
Experimente: July is ___ June this year. (hotter than / hoter than / more hot than) Resposta: hotter than — Hot dobra a última letra antes de -er: hotter (não "hoter").
Experimente: This room is ___ the kitchen. (larger than / largeer than / more large than) Resposta: larger than — Large já termina em -e mudo, então é só acrescentar -r: larger (não "largeer").
Palavras longas: more ... than
Coloque more na frente e mantenha than.
Senfarren View Hotel is more expensive than the hostel.
This book is more interesting than the film.
Physics is more difficult than math for me.
Watch out: most two-beat words use more too: more famous, more modern, more careful (not "famouser"). Words ending in -y take the ending instead: busier, happier.
Experimente: This book is ___ the film. (more interesting than / interestinger than / more interesting that) Resposta: more interesting than — Interesting é uma palavra longa, então use more na frente, não uma terminação -er (não "interestinger"). Mantenha than na comparação: more interesting than the film.
Repare no padrão: heavy → heavier · easy → easier · happy → happier · busy → busier. O y vira ier.
This box is heavier than that one.
Mondays are busier than Fridays.
She is happier than before.
Experimente: This box is ___ that one. (heavier than / more heavy than / heavyer than) Resposta: heavier than — Heavy termina em -y, então o y muda para ier: heavier (não "heavyer", e não "more heavy", porque essa palavra curta em -y ainda usa a terminação).
good, bad, far
This café is better than the old one.
The traffic today is worse than yesterday.
The station is farther than (or further than) the park.
Experimente: This café is ___ the old one. (better than / gooder than / more good than) Resposta: better than — Good não recebe -er e não usa more. Tem forma própria: better than. ("Gooder" e "more good" seguiriam o padrão regular, mas good é uma das três exceções para decorar.)
Experimente: Senfarren View Hotel is ___ the hostel, and the walk there is ___ I thought. (more expensive than … longer than / expensiver than … more long than / more expensive than … more long than) Resposta: more expensive than … longer than — Expensive é longa → more expensive. Long é curta → longer (adicione -er).
