この組み合わせを覚えましょう：in ＝ 何かの中に。都市を言うときも in を使います。

in ＝ 中に

• The pen is in the bag.
• Amina is in the library.
• Hiroshi lives in Haffenville.
• Not "Amina lives on Haffenville." — say "Amina lives in Haffenville.". 都市には "on" ではなく in を合わせます。
• やってみよう: Hiroshi lives ___ Haffenville. (in / on / under) 答え: in — 都市には in を使います：in Haffenville。「on」は表面を表すときに使い、都市には使いません。

on ＝ 表面に

この組み合わせを覚えましょう：on ＝ 物の表面に接している状態。

• The book is on the table.
• The cup is on the desk.
• The bag is on the chair.
• Not "The book is in the table." — say "The book is on the table.". 上に載っているので on を合わせます。「in」だとテーブルの中という意味になってしまいます。
• やってみよう: The book is ___ the table. (on / in / under) 答え: on — 本はテーブルの上に載っているので、on を使います。「in」だとテーブルの中という意味になってしまいます。

under ＝ 下に

この組み合わせを覚えましょう：under ＝ 何かの下に。

• The ball is under the chair.
• The shoes are under the bed.
• The cat is under the table.
• Not "The ball is on the chair." — say "The ball is under the chair.". 下にあるので under です。「on」だとボールが上にあることになってしまいます。
• やってみよう: The ball is ___ the chair, on the floor. (under / on / in) 答え: under — ボールはイスの下にあるので、under を使います。「on」だとイスの上に載っていることになってしまいます。
• やってみよう: The keys are ___ the bag. (in / on / under) 答え: in — 鍵はバッグの中にあるので、in を使います。「on」だとバッグの上に載っているという意味になります。

next to ＝ 隣に

この組み合わせを覚えましょう：next to ＝ すぐ隣に。前に余計なことばを足してはいけません。

• Amina sits next to Hiroshi.
• The cafe is next to the library.
• The lamp is next to the bed.
• Not "Amina sits in next to Hiroshi." — say "Amina sits next to Hiroshi.". そのまま next to と言います。前に "in" を足さないようにしましょう。
• やってみよう: The cafe is ___ the library. (next to / next of / next) 答え: next to — まとまりで next to と言います。「next of」や「next」だけにはしません。

between ＝ あいだに

この組み合わせを覚えましょう：between ＝ 両側に1つずつある、2つのものの真ん中に。

• The bank is between the two shops.
• Amina sits between Hiroshi and Sofia.
• The park is between the school and the cafe.
• Not "The bank is next to the two shops." — say "The bank is between the two shops.". next to は1つのものの隣ですが、between は両側にものがある真ん中を指します。
• やってみよう: The bank is ___ the two shops. (between / next to / under) 答え: between — 両側に店が1軒ずつあるので、between を使います。「next to」は1つのものの隣という意味です。

behind ＝ 後ろに

この組み合わせを覚えましょう：behind ＝ 何かの後ろに。あとに "of" を足してはいけません。

• The car is behind the house.
• The garden is behind the school.
• Hiroshi stands behind Amina.
• Not "The car is behind of the house." — say "The car is behind the house.". そのまま behind と言います。あとに "of" はつけません。
• やってみよう: The car is ___ the house, where you can't see it from the street. (behind / behind of / in front of) 答え: behind — 後ろにあるので behind を使います。あとに "of" はつけません。

in front of ＝ 前に

この組み合わせを覚えましょう：in front of ＝ 何かの前に。

• Hiroshi stands in front of the door.
• The bus stops in front of the library.
• A tree is in front of the house.
• Not "Hiroshi stands behind the door." — say "Hiroshi stands in front of the door.". 前にあるので in front of です。「behind」だと後ろにいることになってしまいます。
• やってみよう: The bus stops ___ the library, right by the entrance. (in front of / behind / between) 答え: in front of — 入口の前に止まるので、in front of を使います。「behind」だと後ろになってしまいます。
• やってみよう: The cup sits on top of the desk. The cup is ___ the desk. (on / in / under) 答え: on — 表面の上に載っているときは on を使います：on the desk。「in」は中、「under」は下を意味します。
