SO / NEITHER AGREEMENTS (A2 Grammar)

SO + auxiliary + I = me too (positive). NEITHER + auxiliary + I = me neither (negative).

Quick tip: Positive = SO + auxiliary + I. Negative = NEITHER + auxiliary + I. Match the auxiliary!

SO + auxiliary + I (positive agreement)

Agree with positive: So + auxiliary (am/do/can/have) + subject.

• I'm hungry. - So am I!
• I like pizza. - So do I!
• She can swim. - So can I!
• I've been to Paris. - So have I!

NEITHER + auxiliary + I (negative agreement)

Agree with negative: Neither + auxiliary + subject. No 'not' needed.

• I'm not tired. - Neither am I!
• I don't like coffee. - Neither do I!
• She can't drive. - Neither can I!
• I haven't eaten. - Neither have I!

Match the auxiliary verb

Your response MUST match the auxiliary in the statement.

• I am tired. - So am I.
• I like it. - So do I.
• I can swim. - So can I.
• I have been there. - So have I.

Common mistakes

• Not "I like it. - So like I." — say "I like it. - So do I.". Use auxiliary DO, not main verb.
• Not "I'm not ready. - So am I." — say "I'm not ready. - Neither am I.". Negative = NEITHER, not SO.
