PRESENT CONTINUOUS FOR FUTURE (A2 Grammar)
Use Present Continuous for fixed arrangements and scheduled plans with future time words.
Quick tip: Arranged/booked/scheduled = Present Continuous. Must include future time word!
Form: am/is/are + verb-ING + future time
Same form as present, but add future time word (tomorrow, next week).
- I'm meeting John tomorrow.
- She's flying to Paris next week.
- We're having dinner tonight at 7pm.
- They're getting married in June.
Use: Fixed arrangements & appointments
Use when everything is arranged, booked, or scheduled. The plan is definite.
- I'm seeing the dentist at 3pm.
- We're visiting grandma this weekend.
- She's starting her new job Monday.
- I'm playing tennis with Sarah tomorrow.
Questions: What are you doing...?
Ask about future arrangements using Present Continuous questions.
- What are you doing tonight?
- When are you leaving?
- Is she coming to the party?
- Are you working tomorrow?
Common mistakes
- Not "I'm meeting him (no time word)" — say "I'm meeting him tomorrow". Add future time word for clarity.
- Not "I'm knowing the answer tomorrow" — say "I'll know the answer tomorrow". Know is stative - use WILL.
Practise it
Is it arranged/booked/scheduled? Is the time set? YES = Present Continuous. NO = use going to or will.
