Greetings and names (A1 Vocabulary)

Hello and Hi open a talk at any time of day. Good morning is for the morning.

Saying hello

• hello — Hello! Come in, please.
• hi — Hi, Amina!
• good morning — Good morning, Amina.
• Try it: Student: ___ Hiroshi: Yes, come in and sit down. A new student comes into the room. Choose what the student says. (Good morning! / Goodbye! / Bye!) Answer: Good morning! — The student is coming IN, so the talk is only starting: Good morning! The other two lines end a talk, and this one has not started yet.

Saying goodbye

Goodbye and Bye close a talk. Bye is the short one, for friends.

• goodbye — Goodbye, Ms. Chen!
• bye — Bye, Hiroshi!
• Try it: Hiroshi: You are ready for class now. Amina: ___ Amina is finished at the front desk. Choose what she says. (Goodbye, Hiroshi! / Hi, Hiroshi! / Hello, Hiroshi!) Answer: Goodbye, Hiroshi! — Hiroshi says she is ready, so the visit is over and Amina closes it: Goodbye, Hiroshi! Hi and Hello open a talk instead.

How are you?

How are you? asks how someone feels. A short, friendly answer is I'm fine.

• How are you? — Hello, Hiroshi. How are you?
• I'm fine — I'm fine, Hiroshi.
• Try it: Ms. Chen: Good morning, Amina. ___ Amina: I'm fine. Choose what Ms. Chen says next. (How are you? / What's your name? / Nice to meet you.) Answer: How are you? — Amina answers with how she feels, so Ms. Chen asked How are you? Ms. Chen has already used her name, so she is not asking What's your name?, and the two of them are not meeting for the first time.

Names

To ask a name, say What's your name? Answer with My name is and your name. At a first meeting, say Nice to meet you.
