A street is a road in a town, with buildings on it. Places are on a street: the pharmacy is on Moffen Street.
The street
street /striːt/ — on Moffen Street
Try it: Amina: Excuse me, is the library near here? Lars: Yes. It is on this ___. (street / corner / park) Answer: street — A street is the road you are standing on, with the buildings along it.
Go straight
Look at the picture. The arrow goes straight ahead: you keep walking the same way and you do not turn.
go straight /ɡoʊ streɪt/ — Go straight for two minutes.
Try it: Hiroshi: Excuse me, where is the bank? Mei: It is on this street. ___ and you are there. (Turn left / Go straight / Turn right) Answer: Go straight — The bank is on the same street, so you keep walking the same way: Go straight. You turn only when you change to another street.
Turn left, turn right
Turn left and turn right mean go onto a new street. Left and right are the two sides.
turn left /tɜːrn lɛft/ — Turn left at the bank.
turn right /tɜːrn raɪt/ — Turn right at the park.
Not "Turn right at the bank. (this takes you away from the library)" — say "Turn left at the bank. (the library is on the left)". Say the side that matches where the place is.
Try it: Sofia: Is the hospital on this street?
Diego: No. Look at the picture and go that way at the end. ___. (Go straight / Turn right / Turn left) Answer: Turn right — The arrow in the picture bends to the right, so it is Turn right. Go straight would keep you on this street, where the hospital is not.
On the corner
A corner is where two streets meet. A place at that point is on the corner.
on the corner /ɑːn ðə ˈkɔːr.nɚ/ — The store is on the corner.
Try it: Yasmin: Where is the pharmacy? Mateo: Go straight. Look at the picture. It is ___. (on the street / in front of / on the corner) Answer: on the corner — Two streets meet at that point, and that point is on the corner.
