Have vs Has (A1 Grammar)

Use have with I/you/we/they. Use has with he/she/it.

Quick tip: I/you/we/they→have, he/she/it→has. After don't/doesn't/do/does, always use have.

I / you / we / they → have

Use have with I, you, we, they.

• I have a car.
• You have a nice house.
• They have two children.

he / she / it → has

Use has with he, she, it, and one person or thing.

• He has a bike.
• She has brown eyes.
• The cat has four legs.

Negatives: I / you / we / they

Use don't have with I, you, we, they.

• I don't have time.
• You don't have to come.
• They don't have a car.

Negatives: he / she / it

Use doesn't have with he, she, it.

• He doesn't have a car.
• She doesn't have time.
• It doesn't have a name.

Questions: Do / Does + have

Start with Do or Does, then use have.

• Do you have a pen?
• Does she have a car?
• Do they have kids?

Common mistakes

• Not "I has a book." — say "I have a book.". I/you/we/they take have.
• Not "She have a dog." — say "She has a dog.". he/she/it take has.
• Not "I don't has time." — say "I don't have time.". Use have after don't.
• Not "She doesn't has a car." — say "She doesn't have a car.". Use have after doesn't.
• Not "Does he has a car?" — say "Does he have a car?". Use have after does.
