Pour comparer deux choses avec un mot court (une syllabe, comme tall, fast, old, cheap), ajoute -er et utilise than.
Mots courts : ajoute -er than
Amina is taller than Lars.
The metro is faster than the bus.
This jacket is cheaper than that one.
Two spelling changes to watch: words like big and hot double the last letter (big → bigger, hot → hotter), and words already ending in -e just add -r (large → larger, nice → nicer).
So it is bigger (not "biger") and larger (not "largeer").
Essayez: The metro is ___ the bus. (faster than / more fast than / faster that) Réponse: faster than — Fast est un mot court, donc ajoute -er : faster. Les mots courts ne prennent pas « more » (pas « more fast »). Et le mot de comparaison est than, pas « that » : faster than the bus.
Essayez: July is ___ June this year. (hotter than / hoter than / more hot than) Réponse: hotter than — Hot double sa dernière lettre devant -er : hotter (et non « hoter »).
Essayez: This room is ___ the kitchen. (larger than / largeer than / more large than) Réponse: larger than — Large se termine déjà par un -e muet, donc ajoute simplement -r : larger (et non « largeer »).
Mots longs : more ... than
Place more devant et garde than.
Senfarren View Hotel is more expensive than the hostel.
This book is more interesting than the film.
Physics is more difficult than math for me.
Watch out: most two-beat words use more too: more famous, more modern, more careful (not "famouser"). Words ending in -y take the ending instead: busier, happier.
Essayez: This book is ___ the film. (more interesting than / interestinger than / more interesting that) Réponse: more interesting than — Interesting est un mot long, donc utilise more devant plutôt qu’une terminaison en -er (pas « interestinger »). Garde than pour la comparaison : more interesting than the film.
This box is heavier than that one.
Mondays are busier than Fridays.
She is happier than before.
Essayez: This box is ___ that one. (heavier than / more heavy than / heavyer than) Réponse: heavier than — Heavy se termine par -y, donc le y se transforme en ier : heavier (et non « heavyer », ni « more heavy », car ce mot court en -y prend bien la terminaison).
good, bad, far
This café is better than the old one.
The traffic today is worse than yesterday.
The station is farther than (or further than) the park.
Essayez: This café is ___ the old one. (better than / gooder than / more good than) Réponse: better than — Good ne prend ni -er ni more. Il a sa propre forme : better than. (« Gooder » et « more good » suivraient les règles régulières, mais good fait partie des trois exceptions à mémoriser.)
Essayez: Senfarren View Hotel is ___ the hostel, and the walk there is ___ I thought. (more expensive than … longer than / expensiver than … more long than / more expensive than … more long than) Réponse: more expensive than … longer than — Expensive est long → more expensive. Long est court → longer (ajoute -er).
