Phrasal verbs separables: turn it on, turn it off (A2)

Un phrasal verb es un verbo + una partícula, en inglés particle (on, off, up), como turn on y pick up. Las dos palabras juntas tienen un solo significado.

Un verbo y una partícula

• Turn on your computer.
• Pick up that bag.
• Pruébalo: Woman: The baby wants to see the birds. Man: Okay. I'll ___ her up. Elige lo que dice el hombre. (put / pick / set) Respuesta: pick — La bebé quiere ver los pájaros, así que él la va a levantar: pick her up.

Algunos se pueden separar

Algunos de estos verbos se pueden separar. El objeto puede ir después de las dos palabras o en el medio: turn off the phone o turn the phone off.

• Turn off the phone.
• Turn the phone off.
• Pruébalo: Woman: The pizza is ready. Man: Great. Can you ___ the oven off? Elige lo que dice el hombre. (look / turn / run) Respuesta: turn — La pizza está lista, así que apagan el horno: turn the oven off.

it y them van en el medio

Cuando el objeto es it o them, ponlo en el medio: turn it off, no turn off it.

• Turn it off.
• Put them on.
• Not "Turn off it." — say "Turn it off.". it y them van en el medio.
• Pruébalo: Woman: The kids' shoes are all over the floor. Man: Sorry! I'll ___ now. Elige lo que dice el hombre. (pick up them / put them on / pick them up) Respuesta: pick them up — Los zapatos están en el piso, y them va en el medio: pick them up.

Algunos nunca se separan

Algunos nunca se separan: look for it, run out of it. El objeto siempre va al final.

• Where are my keys? I'm looking for them.
• We never run out of coffee.
• Pruébalo: Man: There's no milk in the refrigerator. Woman: Really? Did we ___? Elige lo que dice la mujer. (run it out of / run out of it / put it on) Respuesta: run out of it — No hay leche, y run out of nunca se separa: run out of it.

Ya conoces dos de estos: try it on y fill it out. Ahí el it también va en el medio.

• Please fill it out.
• Pruébalo: Man: What do I do with this form? Woman: You need to ___ and give it to the man at the desk. Elige lo que dice la mujer. (fill it out / set it up / fill out it) Respuesta: fill it out — Él escribe en el formulario, y it va en el medio: fill it out.

¿Se separa?

turn on, turn off, put on, take off, pick up y set up se pueden separar. look for y run out of nunca se separan.
