Para comparar dos cosas con una palabra corta (un solo golpe de voz, como tall, fast, old, cheap), añade -er y usa than.
Palabras cortas: añade -er than
Amina is taller than Lars.
The metro is faster than the bus.
This jacket is cheaper than that one.
Two spelling changes to watch: words like big and hot double the last letter (big → bigger, hot → hotter), and words already ending in -e just add -r (large → larger, nice → nicer).
So it is bigger (not "biger") and larger (not "largeer").
Pruébalo: The metro is ___ the bus. (faster than / more fast than / faster that) Respuesta: faster than — Fast es una palabra corta, así que añade -er: faster. Las palabras cortas no llevan "more" (no "more fast"). Y la palabra para comparar es than, no "that": faster than the bus.
Pruébalo: July is ___ June this year. (hotter than / hoter than / more hot than) Respuesta: hotter than — Hot dobla su última letra antes de -er: hotter (no "hoter").
Pruébalo: This room is ___ the kitchen. (larger than / largeer than / more large than) Respuesta: larger than — Large ya termina en -e muda, así que solo añade -r: larger (no "largeer").
Palabras largas: more ... than
Pon more delante y mantén than.
Senfarren View Hotel is more expensive than the hostel.
This book is more interesting than the film.
Physics is more difficult than math for me.
Watch out: most two-beat words use more too: more famous, more modern, more careful (not "famouser"). Words ending in -y take the ending instead: busier, happier.
Pruébalo: This book is ___ the film. (more interesting than / interestinger than / more interesting that) Respuesta: more interesting than — Interesting es una palabra larga, así que usa more delante, no una terminación -er (no "interestinger"). Mantén than para la comparación: more interesting than the film.
This box is heavier than that one.
Mondays are busier than Fridays.
She is happier than before.
Pruébalo: This box is ___ that one. (heavier than / more heavy than / heavyer than) Respuesta: heavier than — Heavy termina en -y, así que la y cambia a ier: heavier (no "heavyer", y no "more heavy", porque esta palabra corta en -y sí lleva la terminación).
good, bad, far
This café is better than the old one.
The traffic today is worse than yesterday.
The station is farther than (or further than) the park.
Pruébalo: This café is ___ the old one. (better than / gooder than / more good than) Respuesta: better than — Good no añade -er y no lleva more. Tiene su propia forma: better than. ("Gooder" y "more good" son los patrones regulares, pero good es una de las tres que hay que memorizar.)
Pruébalo: Senfarren View Hotel is ___ the hostel, and the walk there is ___ I thought. (more expensive than … longer than / expensiver than … more long than / more expensive than … more long than) Respuesta: more expensive than … longer than — Expensive es larga → more expensive. Long es corta → longer (añade -er).
