Was / Were (A1)

Используй was с I, he, she, it.

I / he / she / it: was

I was at home.
He was tired.
It was cold.
Not "I were at home." — say "I was at home.". С I форма прошедшего времени — was, не were.
Попробуйте: Yesterday it ___ very cold. (was / were / is) Ответ: was — It берёт was, а не were. ("Is" — настоящее время, "yesterday" подсказывает, что это прошедшее.) Значит: it was cold.

Используй were с you, we и they.

You were late.
We were happy.
They were at school.
Not "They was at school." — say "They were at school.". С they используй were, was только для I, he, she, it.
Попробуйте: Amina and Hiroshi ___ at Magaff Library. (were / was / are) Ответ: were — Amina and Hiroshi = they, значит форма — were, а не was: They were at Magaff Library.

Перед каждым словом спроси себя: кто? I/he/she/it → was. you/we/they → were.

He was here. / They were here.
I was tired. / We were tired.
Not "He were here. / They was here." — say "He was here. / They were here.". Подлежащее решает: was для одного (I/he/she/it), were для you/we/they.
Попробуйте: Lars ___ at the park, but his friends ___ at the gym. (was … were / were … was / was … was) Ответ: was … were — Lars = he → was. His friends = they → were. Каждый раз смотри, о ком речь, — это и решает, was или were.

Добавь not после was или were: wasn't (I/he/she/it), weren't (you/we/they).

I wasn't hungry.
He wasn't there.
They weren't happy.
Not "I not was hungry." — say "I wasn't hungry.". Not идёт после was, а не перед ним.
Попробуйте: She ___ at home last night. (wasn't / weren't / not was) Ответ: wasn't — She берёт was, значит отрицание — wasn't (не weren't), и not идёт после: She wasn't at home.

Чтобы спросить, поставь Was или Were перед тем, о ком спрашиваешь.

Was she at home?
Were you late?
Was it cold?
Not "You were late? (asking)" — say "Were you late?". В вопросе were идёт первым, потом подлежащее.
Попробуйте: ___ you late for class? (Were / Was / Did) Ответ: Were — You берёт were, и в вопросе оно идёт первым: Were you late? (Was — для I/he/she/it.)
Попробуйте: Remember: who is it? Mei ___ at the cooking class. (was / were / are) Ответ: was — Mei = she → was. (Это основной выбор: I/he/she/it → was, you/we/they → were.)
