Aqui está o conjunto completo: I → myself, you (uma pessoa) → yourself, he → himself, she → herself, it → itself, we → ourselves, you (mais de uma) → yourselves, they → themselves.
The cat washed itself after eating.
Come in, everyone — help yourselves to some tea!
Watch the forms: himself (never "hisself") and themselves (never "theirselves").
Experimente: They enjoyed ___ at the party.
Experimente: The dog is clean now. It washed ___.
Experimente: Welcome, everyone! Please help ___ to some food.
Se a pessoa faz a ação a si mesma, use a palavra com -self, não me / her / them.
I cut myself while cooking.
She taught herself to paint.
Be careful, don't hurt yourself.
Not "I hurt me." — say "I hurt myself.".
Experimente: Be careful with the knife. Don't cut ___.
Uma pessoa diferente → me, her, them. A palavra mostra quem é.
She saw herself in the mirror. (the same person)
She saw her across the room. (a different person)
We helped ourselves to cake. (us, the same people)
Not "She saw her in the mirror." — say "She saw herself in the mirror.". No espelho você vê a mesma pessoa, então herself. Her seria outra pessoa.
Experimente: Hiroshi looked at ___ in the mirror. (himself / him / his) Resposta: himself — No espelho ele vê a mesma pessoa, himself. "Him" indicaria um homem diferente, e "his" mostra posse, não a pessoa: Hiroshi looked at himself.
Aqui ela não é quem recebe a ação: dá para tirar e a frase continua funcionando: I made this cake myself → I made this cake.
I made this cake myself. (I did it, no one helped)
The manager herself phoned to say sorry. (the manager, not an assistant)
You can move it to the end: I fixed the bike myself = I myself fixed the bike.
Experimente: Nobody helped Sara. She painted the whole room ___. (herself / her / she) Resposta: herself — Aqui herself dá ênfase: a Sara fez sozinha, sem ajuda. O que ela pintou é "the whole room", não herself — você poderia até tirar a palavra (She painted the whole room).
(Kenji built the shelf himself. / Kenji hurt himself with the hammer.) Resposta: Kenji built the shelf himself. — "Kenji built the shelf himself" usa himself para dar ênfase: ele fez o trabalho sozinho, e o que ele construiu é "the shelf". "Kenji hurt himself" é o outro uso: ali a ação volta e himself é a pessoa machucada. A situação fala de trabalhar sozinho, então: built the shelf himself.
Qual encaixa melhor?
Uma pessoa diferente → me, you, her, him, them. Uma frase pode até precisar das duas.
Mei made the dress herself, then gave it to her sister. (same person, then another)
I told myself to stay calm, then I told them the news. (myself = me; them = other people)
Ask same person? → yes: a -self word. → no: me / her / them.
Experimente: Mei made the dress ___, then she showed it to ___. (herself … her / her … herself / her … her) Resposta: herself … her — A mesma pessoa → herself. Outra pessoa → her.
