2つのものを比べる (A2)

短い単語（tall, fast, old, cheap など音のまとまりが1つのもの）を使って2つのものを比べるときは、語尾に -er をつけて than を使います。

短い単語: -er than をつける

Amina is taller than Lars.
The metro is faster than the bus.
This jacket is cheaper than that one.
Two spelling changes to watch: words like big and hot double the last letter (big → bigger, hot → hotter), and words already ending in -e just add -r (large → larger, nice → nicer).
So it is bigger (not "biger") and larger (not "largeer").
やってみよう: The metro is ___ the bus. (faster than / more fast than / faster that) 答え: faster than — Fast は短い単語なので、語尾に -er をつけて faster にします。短い単語には more をつけません（"more fast" は不可）。また、比べることばは that ではなく than なので、faster than the bus になります。
やってみよう: July is ___ June this year. (hotter than / hoter than / more hot than) 答え: hotter than — Hot は -er をつける前に最後の文字を重ねて hotter にします（"hoter" ではありません）。Hot は短い単語なので、"more hot" ではなく語尾変化を使います。
やってみよう: This room is ___ the kitchen. (larger than / largeer than / more large than) 答え: larger than — Large はすでに発音しない -e で終わっているので、-r だけをつけて larger にします（"largeer" ではありません）。Large は短い単語なので、"more large" ではなく語尾変化を使います。

長めの単語（fa-mous, mo-dern, ex-pen-sive など音のまとまりが2つ以上のもの）では、-er をつけません。前に more を置いて、うしろに than を続けます。

Senfarren View Hotel is more expensive than the hostel.
This book is more interesting than the film.
Physics is more difficult than math for me.
Watch out: most two-beat words use more too: more famous, more modern, more careful (not "famouser"). Words ending in -y take the ending instead: busier, happier.
やってみよう: This book is ___ the film. (more interesting than / interestinger than / more interesting that) 答え: more interesting than — Interesting は長い単語なので、語尾に -er をつける（"interestinger"）のではなく、前に more を置きます。比べる対象の前には than を残して、more interesting than the film にします。

ここで大切なのは長さではなく、-y で終わっているかどうかです。heavy → heavier · easy → easier · happy → happier · busy → busier のパターンを見てみましょう。y が ier に変わります。

This box is heavier than that one.
Mondays are busier than Fridays.
She is happier than before.
やってみよう: This box is ___ that one. (heavier than / more heavy than / heavyer than) 答え: heavier than — Heavy は -y で終わるので、y を ier に変えて heavier にします（"heavyer" ではありません。また、-y で終わる短い単語は語尾変化を使うため、"more heavy" にもしません）。

よく使う単語の中に、このパターンに当てはまらないものがいくつかあります。次の3つをそのまま覚えましょう。good → better、bad → worse、far → farther（またはどんな距離にも使える further）。

This café is better than the old one.
The traffic today is worse than yesterday.
The station is farther than (or further than) the park.

(more expensive than … longer than / expensiver than … more long than / more expensive than … more long than) 答え: more expensive than … longer than — Expensive は長い単語なので more expensive になり、long は短い単語なので -er をつけて longer になります。単語の長さによってどちらを使うかが決まります。長い単語には more、短い単語には -er を使います。
