日付と序数 (A1)

列の何番目か、または月の何日かを言うときは、first、second、third を使います。この3つはパターンに当てはまらないので、1つずつ覚えましょう。

first, second, third（1番目、2番目、3番目）

• first /fɜːrst/ — Amina is first in the line.
• second /ˈsek.ənd/ — Lars is second.
• third /θɜːrd/ — The class is on March third.

third のあとの語尾

ほかのほとんどの数は、最後の数のことばを見て、-th をつけます: four → fourth six → sixth ten → tenth 最後が -y のときは、まず -ie に変えます: twenty → twentieth。five → fifth のように、もう少し変わるものもいくつかあります。 twenty のあとはまたパターンがくり返されるので、twenty-one → twenty-first です。

• fourth /fɔːrθ/ — My class is on June fourth.
• tenth /tenθ/ — The party is on the tenth.
• twentieth /ˈtwen.ti.əθ/ — We meet on the twentieth.
• twenty-first /ˌtwen.ti ˈfɜːrst/ — Her birthday is on the twenty-first.

birthday と date of birth

birthday は、パーティーをする日です。date of birth は、同じ日を書類に書いたものです。アメリカでは月が先に来ます: May 3 は 5/3 と書きます。

年の言い方

年は、1つの大きな数としてではなく、2つに分けて言います: 1998 → nineteen ninety-eight 2024 → twenty twenty-four 2000年から2009年までは、分けずに言います: 2000 → two thousand。
