POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS (A2 Grammar)

Possessive pronouns replace 'possessive adjective + noun'. They show ownership without noun.

Quick tip: Possessive adjective + NOUN (my book). Possessive pronoun = NO noun (mine). HIS is same for both!

Possessive adjective vs pronoun

Adjective + noun. Pronoun replaces the whole phrase (no noun after).

• This is my book. - This book is mine.
• That's your car. - That car is yours.
• It's her phone. - The phone is hers.
• Those are their keys. - Those are theirs.

Each subject has a matching possessive pronoun. His is same for both.

• I - my - mine (This is mine.)
• you - your - yours (Is this yours?)
• he - his - his (That's his.)
• she - her - hers (The bag is hers.)

NO noun after possessive pronouns

Possessive pronouns stand alone. Never put a noun after.

• This is mine. (NOT: mine book)
• That car is yours. (NOT: yours car)
• These are ours. (NOT: ours keys)
• Those bags are theirs. (NOT: theirs bags)

Common mistakes

• Not "This is mines" — say "This is mine". MINE has no -s.
• Not "That's hers book" — say "That's her book OR That book is hers". No noun after pronoun.

Noun after? = possessive adjective (my/your). No noun? = possessive pronoun (mine/yours).
