WH Questions (A1 Grammar)

Use question words to ask for specific information.

Quick tip: WH word + do/does + subject + base verb + ?

Structure

WH word + do/does + subject + base verb?

• What do you do?
• Where does she live?
• When do they arrive?

What, Where, When

What=things, Where=places, When=time.

• What is your name?
• Where is the bank?
• When is your birthday?

Who, Why, How

Who=people, Why=reasons, How=manner.

• Who is he?
• Why are you late?
• How do you go to work?

Common mistakes

• Not "Where you live?" — say "Where do you live?". Need do/does before subject.
• Not "What does he does?" — say "What does he do?". Base verb after does.
• Not "Where does they work?" — say "Where do they work?". Use do with they.
